Subversive Compliance
Rational
Although the brief is pretty open ended I was given some direction from the client. Mainly that although the work should reflect the music I should try and steer clear of more typical dance music visual tropes.
He also had a particular affinity for Dada art and, being some what older, was an avid collector of 80 DIY zines which had led to him having a disposition towards playful collage based work. This DIY aesthetic as well as the rebellious nature of Dada and 80s zines needs to be reflected in the final outcomes given the name.
Although this would suggest something highly political and serious the client highlighted that although it should reference the early anti fascist motions of Dada it should also be quite playful and not too serious given the tongue in cheek nature of the labels name.
I also felt it was important to bear in mind the context and production method of the final outcome when starting this project. Given that it is only a small run record of 100 copies, most of which will be bought or sent out to DJs rather than collectors, the design needs to be eye catching so as to stand out from the 100s of other records that fall under the vast spectrum of electronic music yet it will need to be functional and be able to be produced cheaply given that it isn't a high end collectable.
